DEFINITION OF POSITION:  The School-Based Mental Health Therapist is responsible for providing direct mental health services to students in grades P-12 experiencing behavioral and/or mental health wellness difficulties that interfere with their academic progress and social/emotional functioning in the school environment.  The therapist may also provide consultation services to school staff and multi-tier systems to support the overall mental health wellness goals of the schools.  The therapist must have a high degree of self-motivation and initiation. 

 

SUPERVISOR:  Assistant Director of Special Services                             

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree from an accredited university or college in the field of social work, psychology, or related field
• Licensed in the State of Washington as a mental health provider (LICSW)
• Successful experience as a mental health provider
• Knowledge of Washington State mental health laws and regulations 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience working with students, families and staff
• Knowledge of school mental health support systems
• Knowledge of FERPA laws and procedures
• Experience providing mental health diagnosis, treatment, and support for children and adolescents
• Experience providing support in an educational setting 

SPECIFIC JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES:

• Provide direct mental health services including intake assessment, individual/group therapy, and crisis intervention to assigned students
• Maintain regular contact and communication with the parent/guardian/building administrator of each student served
• Develop treatment plans, treatment plan updates, and progress notes
• Furnish reports/updates to outside agencies, school principals, school counselors, teachers, IEP teams who have legitimate educational interest and in accordance with district policies and state and federal rules and regulations
• Attend regularly scheduled school staff meetings and clinical supervision meetings
• Provide consultation for school staff regarding mental health wellness issues as needed/requested by staff/administrators
• Provide complete and timely documentation to support services rendered and progress toward goals
• Consistently demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain good public relations with families, referral agencies and other community resources/partnerships through appropriate organizational, written and verbal skills
• Demonstrate appropriate cultural competency skills
• Attend trainings/professional development related to the improvement of therapeutic skills as directed.
• Demonstrate excellent attendance
• Provide regular professional development to school staff related to mental health in the schools.
• Complete regular, accurate Medicaid billing
• Contribute to a safe and healthy school environment
• Organize and prioritize work while being flexible in regards to job duties and responsibilities
• Regularly demonstrate professionalism in appearance, actions, decisions and overall performance
• Demonstrate effective student management techniques and systems
• Ability to positively interact with students who may present challenging behaviors
• Work positively with a wide variety of people both inside and outside of the organization
• Work with colleagues and teams in a collaborative manner
• Meet deadlines and multiple demands in pressure situations while maintaining high levels of quality work

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand, walk, and sit frequently or for prolonged periods of time. Additionally, physical abilities include lifting/carrying/ pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling/typing, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field of vision. Ability to work with physically active students. 

 

TERMS OF CONTRACT:

• Salary: Unrepresented Classified Employee Wage Schedule: $38.22 - $44.71 per hour
• Length of Contract: 4 hours/day 184 days/year
• Benefits/Leaves: Medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year.  Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS).  Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as per board policy.
